Advent is not merely an extension of Christmas but is preparation for Christmas—much like Lent is preparation for Easter. It may be difficult to distance ourselves from the secular world’s extension—and distortion—of Christmas. But when we fully enter into Advent as a time of prayer, we see our lives more clearly as lived in Christ. […]

The Immaculate Conception
Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
On December 8, the Catholic Church celebrates the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that is, her privilege of being conceived free of Original Sin. This day is honored not only as a Solemnity, the highest rank of feast day, but a Holy Day of Obligation, one of a few days in addition to Sundays when Catholics are required to go to Mass. Mary, under her title of the Immaculate Conception is the patroness of the United States of America, and due to this honor, her feast day (December 8th) and Christmas Day (December 25th) are the two Holy Days that never lose their Obligation to attend Mass in the United States, even when they fall on a Monday or a Saturday.
Second Sunday of Advent
In 2025, Catholics have two Mass obligations to fulfill, potentially on back-to-back days. For the Second Sunday of Advent, one may attend any Mass after 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 6th or anytime on Sunday, December 7th. Additionally, there is a 2nd obligation to attend Mass anytime after 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 7th or anytime on Monday, December 8th for the Holy Day. Because one’s obligation is tied to making the day “holy” as a day of rest, any two Masses in those two separate time frames will fulfill one’s obligations, regardless of the prayers you may hear on those dates. Obligation, as outlined in Canon Law, is tied to time, and not to the prayers we hear at Mass. If one were to attend a Saturday night and a Sunday night Mass on the 6th and 7th (after 4:00 p.m. both days), that would satisfy both obligations even though you’d hear the prayers of the Second Sunday of Advent twice. All Masses on the 8th itself would have the prayers for the Immaculate Conception.
Shrine Mass Times
On Monday, December 8, at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Masses will be offered at:
8:30 a.m. (Traditional Latin Low Mass)
12:15 p.m. (English)
6:00 p.m. (Traditional Latin Low Mass).
Plenary Ingulgence
If you are able to come to Our Lady’s Shrine on either Sunday, December 8 in honor of her Immaculate Conception, you will have the opportunity to gain a plenary indulgence from making your pilgrimage on a Solemnity of Our Lady.
