Advent is not merely an extension of Christmas but is preparation for Christmas—much like Lent is preparation for Easter. It may be difficult to distance ourselves from the secular world’s extension—and distortion—of Christmas. But when we fully enter into Advent as a time of prayer, we see our lives more clearly as lived in Christ. […]

Octave Day of Christmas, Holy Day of Obligation, Limited Hours
Holy Day of Obligation
On New Year’s Day, the Shrine of Our Lady of Gaudalupe will have limited operating hours for the January 1st Holy Day of Obligation. The Shrine will be open only from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., closing after the 12:15 pm Mass.
Plenary Indulgence Opportunity
The Jubilee Year of Hope 2025 officially closes at the Shrine on Sunday, December 28, 2025. Beginning with January 1, 2026, the opportunities for a Plenary Indulgence at the Shrine revert to the usual conditions outside of a Jubilee Year. Since the Shrine has a spiritual affinity with the Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, January 1st is one of the liturgical Marian Solemnities on which one may gain a Plenary Indulgence, under the usual conditions regarding detachment from sin, praying for the Pope, going to Confession and Holy Communion, by visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe
One Mass Time
At 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, January 1, 2026, a Low Mass (Traditional Latin) will be offered for the Octave Day of Christmas. While there is no feast day in the Ancient liturgical calendar called Mary, Mother of God, the current legislation in-force grants the opportunity for a possible Plenary Indulgence for the faithful who come to the Shrine on January 1, regardless of the texts used at Holy Mass. This Mass does fulfill all the requirements for the Holy Day of Obligation.
Invoking the Holy Spirit
There is a long-standing tradition that, on New Year’s Day, the faithful pray together for blessings upon the New Year by reciting or singing the hymn Veni, Creator Spiritus. This seven-verse hymn comes from the Office of Vespers on Pentecost, and, of itself, has an Indulgence attached to it when it is recited publicly in any Church on January 1. Let us pray together that the Holy Spirit, in the Year of Grace 2026, will abundantly pour out upon each of us all the gifts we need to continually grow in holiness of life!
Our Lady’s Shrine will be open this year for the following Solemnity Mass. The Shrine will close immediately after the Traditional Latin Mass to allow staff and Volunteers to be with their families.
