Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe Orientation Video
Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke established the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to perpetuate the mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe and invite more people to come to Our Lady as mother. The Shrine is affiliated with the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, offering all pilgrims a direct tie to Our Lady’s gift of herself to the Americas. On December 9, 1531, recent convert Juan Diego was walking in the hills of what is now Mexico City when a woman radiant as with the sun appeared to him. She revealed herself to be the Blessed Virgin Mary and instructed him to build her a house, or shrine, at the site, where she could be honored and God worshipped. She instructed Juan Diego to share her request with the bishop, who then requested a sign that the message was authentic. The Blessed Mother instructed Juan to gather flowers in his cloak, or tilma. Juan was astonished to find beautiful flowers in full bloom on the usually barren hill. He took these flowers to show the bishop as a sign. When Juan Diego opened his cloak to show the flowers, there appeared on his tilma an image of the perfect Virgin, Our Lady of Guadalupe. Everyone present fell to the ground in awe, and a church was built where Our Lady requested. Our Lady desired that this would be a place where she could manifest the mercy and love of God to all who came on pilgrimage there. The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe perpetuates this mission for all Our Lady’s children.
