Laetare Sunday
March 10, 2024, marks the fourth Sunday of Lent, Laetare Sunday.
Why and how do we Celebrate Laetare Sunday?
Laetare Sunday is often associated with the third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday. On these Sundays, the priest wears Rose (or Pink) and there is a added joy in the penitential season. Father Check explains Laetare Sunday and its role in the Lenten Season last year as follows.
“Laetare Sunday, from the first word of the Introit: “Laetare, Jerusalem…” Rejoice, Jerusalem. The Mass vestments soften one hue from violet to rose in anticipation of the delight of a purified heart that will rejoice in the Paschal Mystery soon to come. The fruit of that purification is Christ’s joy, Easter joy. Now is the time for me to give my heart to Jesus Christ unconditionally. This is how I recognize His sovereignty and become a citizen in the Kingdom of God.”
