BLESSED MIGUEL PRO MASS GUILD BLESSED MIGUEL PRO MASS GUILD Patron of Priests, Religious, and Victims of Persecution

Join a Community United in Prayer

Enroll yourself or a loved one in the Blessed Miguel Pro Guild and entrust intentions for priests, religious, and all who suffer persecution.

When you join a Mass Guild, you become part of a sacred community. Each month, your intentions are offered at Holy Mass along with the intentions of fellow guild members. Through Blessed Miguel Pro’s intercession, we pray for priests, religious, and all who suffer persecution, trusting in the strength Christ the King gives His faithful. In prayer, we carry together what none of us can bear alone.

The Blessed Miguel Pro Guild is one of seven Mass Guilds at the Shrine, uniting your prayer intentions with our community of faith. Your intentions are placed at the altar dedicated to Blessed Miguel Pro—an altar that holds his sacred relics—and become part of the Shrine’s continuous prayer.

Holy Mass is celebrated for all guild members on the fourth Monday of each month at 12:15 p.m. You may enroll yourself or honor a loved one, whether living or deceased, through this lasting spiritual gift.

Blessed Miguel Pro

Church Painting

Father Pro was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1925 and had a great devotion to Christ the King and Our Lady of Guadalupe. He willingly risked his life to continue his sacramental ministry to the people of Mexico when the government closed all of the churches. Falsely accused of an attempt on the life of Mexico’s President, he was executed before a firing squad. His last words: “¡Viva Cristo Rey!”– “Long Live Christ the King!”

The artist has incorporated several aspects of Father Pro’s life into this work.

The scene depicts Fr. Pro the second before his execution, arms outstretched, with his last words contained in the radiance around his head.

The two Mexican children at his sides offer a laurel wreath symbolizing victory, and a red crown of thorns symbolizing martyrdom.

The floating cherubs encircle him with red fabric, symbolizing the shedding of blood, leading his spirit to glory in the upper part of the canvas where he participates in the Divine Liturgy for eternity. Both cherubs carry red roses and one holds a palm branch, both symbolic of martyrdom.

Father Miguel Pro was beatified by Pope Saint John Paul II on September 25, 1988.

Blessed Miguel Pro’s relics were placed in the main altar of the Shrine Church during the Dedication of the Church on July 31, 2008.

In addition, a relic was installed at the side-aisle shrine, beneath this painting.

Blessed Miguel Pro Relics

The Shrine’s altar dedicated to Blessed Miguel Pro features an altarpiece depicting the Blessed with arms outstretched at his martyrdom and celebrating the Mass in heavenly glory. Underneath the altar is an additional bone relic which can be viewed and venerated by pilgrims who visit the Shrine. Blessed Miguel Pro’s witness is a striking one; he died less than a century ago on the same continent. By asking for his intercession and imitating his heroic witness, we can also live lives in joyful service to Christ the King.
